The Summer NCTOTA Chapter meeting was held on July 13, 2024, at the L&N Depot in Murphy. A sign dedication marked the Unicoi Turnpike removal route near the site of Fort Butler. All 3,000 Cherokees forced from their homes traveled this route across the NC-TN state line to Fort Armistead on their way to the Cherokee Indian Agency in TN. The Town of Murphy Mayor Tim Radford welcomed attendees. Cherokee Elder and NCTOTA Board emeritus Tom Belt gave the opening prayer; Taran Swimmer sang the Cherokee Anthem, and EBCI Vice Chief Alan B. Ensley spoke about the Cherokees still living in Cherokee County and Robbinsville. EBCI Beloved Woman and NCTOTA VP Carmaleta Monteith offered a blessing after which Mayor Radford and the family of Mary Ann unveiled the sign. Afterward, Dr. Brett Riggs conducted a walking tour entitled “The Long Road to Exile.”
