On March 25, 2025, NCTOTA partnered with the Qualla Boundary Historical Society and the Museum of the Cherokee People to host a lecture by Dr. Stuart Marshall entitled “You Will Remember Your Old Friend: Junaluska’s Trail of Tears and Staying Power.”
Dr. Marshall is the Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Sewanee–The University of the South. Having graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 2023, he is working on a book manuscript based on his dissertation: The Age of Junaluska: Eastern Cherokee Sovereignty in the Long Civil War Era.
Dr. Marshall is a team member of Eastern Cherokee Histories in Translation (ECHT) with colleagues at Western Carolina University.
Dr. Marshall has launched “Retracing the Bell Route: An Archive of Cherokee Removal” at Sewanee. See Cherokee-Bell-Route.org. The Bell Route passed through what is now the greater campus of Sewanee. This digital archive is a project developed in the classrooms in a collaboration supporting Sewanee’s Indigenous Engagement Initiative. Dr. Marshall also serves as the Secretary of the Tennessee Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association and is a member of the Qualla Boundary Historical Society.
