North Carolina has a witness structure. This makes it the only known Witness House in North Carolina. Mainspring Conservation Trust received a gift by the Jones family of the Historic Siler Jones House in Franklin. Some of the interior walls of the house contain logs from a cabin built before 1820. For more than 200 years, the house served as a farmstead, boarding house, and a home to descendants of Franklin’s first white settler, Jesse R. Siler. Siler purchased the property from the State. His log cabin underwent transformations over the next 60 years. In 1888, his son Julius Grady swapped properties with his cousin Harriett and her husband Judge George Jones, who renovated the home. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1982. In 2023, research determined that the road traveled by dispossessed Cherokees ran directly in front of the Siler Jones House.
